This guide is for procurement managers, fleet and plant managers, supply chain teams and mining or construction directors buying from Chinese manufacturers. It addresses orders for Australia, African markets including Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa, and Southeast Asia.
How this shortlist works: This is a shortlist of providers to investigate, not a ranking based on inspection performance. Confirm each provider’s current China service availability, technical scope, accreditation and quotation before booking. The service links describe published capabilities; they do not establish that every office performs every service.
Inspection Companies in China: Comparison for Industrial Buyers
Start with the inspection task. Commodity analysis, machinery acceptance tests and maritime classification require different expertise. Use the table to identify relevant enquiries, then agree the performing entity, factory location and deliverables in writing.
| Provider | Published service area | Procurement task to discuss | Evidence to request |
|---|---|---|---|
| ALS | Commodity inspection and analysis | Metals and mineral sampling or assay | Sampling procedure, laboratory scope and sample custody record |
| Lloyd’s Register | Maritime classification and certification | Marine equipment or class-related requirements | Applicable class rules, approval scope and survey requirements |
| TÜV SÜD | Manufacturing testing, certification and safety services | Machinery or industrial product conformity | Applicable standards, test plan and responsible technical team |
| Eurofins | Laboratory testing, product inspection and audits | Defined analytical tests or product inspection | Relevant business unit, laboratory scope and sample report |
| DEKRA | Industrial inspection, welding and non-destructive testing | Equipment, weld or component checks | Assigned inspectors’ qualifications and test procedures |
| TÜV Rheinland | Vendor inspection and manufacturing surveillance | Factory acceptance tests and pre-shipment inspection | Inspection and test plan, witness points and report scope |
| Intertek | Industrial quality assurance and inspection | Manufacturing oversight and equipment inspection | Technical scope, inspection checklist and reporting arrangements |
| CCIC | Inspection, testing and certification | Trade-related checks and product conformity enquiries | Performing subsidiary and any required programme authorisation |
| Bureau Veritas | Testing, inspection and certification in China | Industrial equipment or materials assessment | Relevant China team, inspection scope and acceptance criteria |
| SGS | Manufacturer inspections and industrial supply chain services | Manufacturing inspection and shipment-related checks | Agreed checklist, inspection records and report limitations |
How the options differ: ALS is relevant when the central requirement is commodity sampling and analysis. Lloyd’s Register has a distinct maritime role. For manufactured equipment, compare the industrial teams at TÜV SÜD, DEKRA, TÜV Rheinland, Intertek, Bureau Veritas and SGS against the same technical specification. Eurofins and CCIC should be assessed through the business unit or subsidiary responsible for the requested work.
What Is an Inspection Company?
An inspection company examines specified goods, equipment or processes against agreed requirements and records its findings. A visit can check quantity, identity, dimensions, workmanship, operation or packing. What it establishes depends on the assignment, access, sampling and evidence recorded.
What is the difference between inspection, testing, an audit and certification?
- Inspection: Checks the identified goods or processes against the agreed checklist.
- Testing: Measures specified properties using defined methods, such as chemical composition or mechanical performance.
- Audit: Examines a manufacturer’s systems, procedures or capability; it does not establish that a particular shipment passes inspection.
- Certification: Provides third-party attestation under a defined scheme. A management-system certificate does not certify every product or batch.
Which inspection stages should a China order include?
Select stages according to the product and failure risks. The four checkpoints below serve different purposes; one visit does not replace every other check.
- Before production: Verify specified materials, drawings, approved samples and readiness before manufacturing starts.
- During production: Check work in progress while defects can still be corrected. For fabricated equipment, agree any weld, coating or assembly witness points in advance.
- Before shipment: Check the completed goods, agreed tests, identification, quantity, packing and documents. Machinery may require a factory acceptance test under an agreed protocol.
- During loading: Record the goods loaded, container condition, securing arrangements and seal number where included in the assignment.
Agree access and notice periods before work begins. A final visit cannot retrospectively witness an inaccessible weld or a test completed without the inspector.

Ten Inspection Providers: Scope, Fit and Questions to Ask
1. ALS: Commodity Inspection and Analysis
ALS publishes assay and inspection services for precious-metal and base-metal-bearing materials. Its relevance to a mining purchase is the relationship between representative sampling, sample preparation and analytical results.
Before booking: Identify the commodity, sampling location, moisture basis where relevant, required analytes and contractual test method. Confirm which China operation will sample or prepare the material and which laboratory will analyse it. An analytical result represents the submitted sample; representative sampling must be addressed separately.

2. Lloyd’s Register: Maritime Classification and Certification
Lloyd’s Register is relevant where a marine asset or equipment order has classification, statutory or marine certification requirements. Its maritime role should not be treated as interchangeable with a general pre-shipment inspection service.
Before booking: Confirm the applicable class rules, equipment approval requirements and survey stages. Lloyd’s Register and LRQA are separate organisations: LR’s Business Assurance and Inspection Services became the independent LRQA business in 2021. Buyers seeking general management-system certification should identify the correct organisation.

3. TÜV SÜD: Manufacturing and Machinery Conformity
TÜV SÜD’s manufacturing services include testing, certification and industrial safety support. This makes it relevant to enquiries where a machinery purchase includes defined safety or market-access requirements.
Before booking: State the machine model, intended use, destination and applicable standards. Ask whether the proposed work is a product test, document review, certification activity or on-site inspection. Confirm the China team and the evidence the assignment will produce.

4. Eurofins: Testing, Product Inspection and Audits
Eurofins operates through specialised laboratories and service businesses. Its published assurance offering includes product inspections and audits, while analytical work depends on the relevant laboratory and method.
Before booking: Specify the material or product and the tests required. For industrial chemicals or steel, request written confirmation of the exact analytical scope rather than relying on a consumer-product inspection description. Identify the performing laboratory through the group’s location directory.

5. DEKRA: Industrial Inspection, Welding and NDT
DEKRA lists machinery and crane inspection, pressure equipment and welding services, non-destructive testing (NDT), calibration and laboratory analysis within its industrial inspection portfolio.
Before booking: Provide drawings, material specifications, the inspection code and required NDT methods. Request qualifications for the assigned personnel and confirmation that the China team can perform the work at the manufacturing site. A generic visual check does not replace a specified weld examination or pressure test.

6. TÜV Rheinland: Vendor Inspection and Manufacturing Surveillance
TÜV Rheinland’s Greater China vendor-inspection page lists factory acceptance tests, pre-shipment inspection, material inspection, manufacturing quality checks and loading or unloading inspections.
Before booking: Agree an inspection and test plan showing the applicable drawings, acceptance criteria and witness or hold points. Specify functional-test conditions and how deviations will be recorded. Confirm whether the quotation covers one visit or surveillance across several manufacturing stages.

7. Intertek: Industrial Quality Assurance and Inspection
Intertek publishes industrial quality assurance and inspection services. For equipment buyers, the useful question is whether the assigned technical team can check the specified manufacturing processes and acceptance requirements.
Before booking: Request a scope covering the relevant mechanical, electrical, fabrication or material checks. Confirm who reviews the report, whether subcontractors will be used and how urgent nonconformities are escalated.
Official Intertek industrial services. For company background, read CAMAL’s Intertek China profile.
8. CCIC: Trade-Related Inspection, Testing and Certification
China Certification and Inspection Group provides inspection, testing and certification through its operating businesses. Buyers should identify the subsidiary responsible for the specific product, location and assignment.
Before booking: Separate commercial inspection from any destination-country conformity programme. If an import certificate is required, verify the current programme appointment, product coverage and shipment route with the destination authority. A group’s general service description does not establish authorisation for a particular shipment.

9. Bureau Veritas: Industrial Testing, Inspection and Certification
Bureau Veritas’s China business provides testing, inspection and certification services. For an industrial purchase, define whether the requirement concerns equipment manufacture, material properties, fabrication quality or a certification scheme.
Before booking: Identify the China business line and performing entity. Ask for a sample report relevant to the product, the inspection procedure and any laboratory accreditation scope required for the assignment. Confirm how measured results and deviations will be tied to the inspected goods.

10. SGS: Manufacturer Inspection and Industrial Supply Chain Checks
SGS China publishes manufacturer-inspection and industrial supply chain services. These can be relevant when a buyer needs agreed manufacturing checks and documented findings before equipment or materials leave China.
Before booking: Agree the product identification, inspection stages, technical criteria and reporting deadline. Confirm which checks are physical examinations, which are witnessed tests and which are document reviews. Where laboratory testing is required, identify the laboratory and its relevant scope separately.

What Should Equipment, Chemical and Steel Buyers Inspect?
Agree the product specification, inspection stage, acceptance criteria and required report before booking. The following are starting points for the purchase contract, not universal checklists for every order.
| Purchase | Checks to specify | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Heavy equipment and plant | Model and serial numbers; configuration; dimensions; specified components; agreed functional or load tests; accessories; spares; packing | Signed test protocol, measured results, photographs of identification plates and a list of unresolved deviations |
| Industrial chemicals | Product identity; batch numbers; agreed sampling procedure; purity or concentration; specified impurities; net quantity; packaging and labels | Sample custody record, batch-linked laboratory results, certificate of analysis and relevant safety data sheet |
| Steel products | Specified grade; dimensions and tolerances; heat numbers; surface condition; coating where ordered; agreed chemical or mechanical tests; bundle markings | Material certificates linked to heat numbers, measurements, test results and photographs of product markings |
For mining projects, connect these checks to the operating conditions at the destination site. A machine running without load does not demonstrate performance under the contractual working conditions. A chemical manufacturer’s certificate of analysis should be checked against independently identified samples where independent analysis is part of the order.
Before selecting a manufacturer, compare product scope using CAMAL’s Chinese equipment manufacturer guide or chemical manufacturer guide. Manufacturer selection and shipment acceptance require separate checks.
How Do You Verify an Inspection Company in China?
Verify the performing legal entity, relevant competence and assignment scope before accepting a quotation. A familiar group name alone does not establish the qualifications of the team attending the factory.
- Confirm identity and independence: Match the quotation, contract and report issuer. Ask about subcontractors and any relationship with the manufacturer.
- Check relevant accreditation: Where accredited inspection is required, examine the ISO/IEC 17020 scope. For accredited laboratory testing, examine the ISO/IEC 17025 scope for the specific method and material.
- Verify at the source: Check certificate validity and scope with the issuing accreditation body. ISO and ASTM publish standards; they are not the accreditation bodies for these assignments.
- Check personnel: Ask for qualifications relevant to the proposed activity, especially welding, NDT, electrical testing or specialist machinery checks.
- Review a relevant sample report: Look for product identification, measured results, photographs, limitations and clear treatment of deviations.
- Agree access and authority: Establish site access, test equipment, production readiness and who can approve a deviation or release the shipment.
The ILAC explanation of laboratory and inspection-body accreditation distinguishes the relevant frameworks. ISO’s explanation of ISO/IEC 17025 describes laboratory competence. An ISO 9001 management-system certificate is not a substitute for laboratory accreditation or shipment-specific inspection findings.
What should an inspection quotation include?
Compare written quotations for the same scope. Ask for the factory address, inspection date, inspector-days, technical disciplines, sampling plan, laboratory fees, travel, reporting, taxes where applicable and reinspection charges. Confirm the report deadline and any conditions that prevent the visit from proceeding.
There is no single reliable inspection price for every industrial order. A brief packing check, chemical sampling assignment and multi-day machinery acceptance test require different resources. Request the total assignment cost and exclusions rather than comparing an isolated daily rate.
Inspection Reports, Failed Checks and TT Payment Decisions
What should a pre-shipment inspection report contain?
A useful report connects the inspected goods to the agreed criteria and records what was actually observed.
- Purchase-order reference, manufacturer address, inspection date and attending personnel.
- Model, serial, batch or heat numbers identifying the goods.
- Applicable drawings, specification revisions and acceptance criteria.
- Quantity available, sampling method and items inspected.
- Measured results, witnessed tests, photographs and instrument details where relevant.
- Nonconformities, inaccessible items, incomplete tests and other limitations.
- Conclusion against the agreed criteria and outstanding actions.
For sampled inspections, agree the inspection level and acceptance limits before the visit. Safety-critical features and unique machinery may require targeted or complete checks rather than a consumer-goods sampling template.
What should happen if an inspection fails?
Record the nonconformities, agree corrective actions and determine whether reinspection is required before accepting the goods.
- Identify the affected units, batches or components and record the evidence.
- Require a written corrective-action proposal and completion date from the manufacturer.
- Have the authorised buyer or engineer decide whether repair, replacement or a documented concession is acceptable.
- Arrange the necessary reinspection or retesting and retain the closure evidence.
- Update the shipment and payment decision under the purchase contract.
When should inspection happen before a TT balance payment?
Where the purchase contract makes balance payment conditional on inspection approval, complete the agreed checks and resolve outstanding nonconformities before authorising that payment.
For orders placed through CAMAL, payment terms are TT only. Agree inspection and acceptance milestones in the purchase contract before paying a deposit. Specify who reviews the report, who approves deviations and what evidence is required to authorise payment. An inspection does not itself control the buyer’s bank transfer or guarantee recovery of funds.
Use CAMAL’s China sourcing-risk guide alongside these checks when verifying the manufacturer and contracting entity.

Inspection Companies in China: Buyer FAQs
Which inspection company in China is best for an industrial order?
Choose the provider whose performing China entity can document competence for the required product, inspection method and acceptance criteria. Compare written scopes, relevant credentials, sample reports and total costs; brand size alone does not determine suitability.
Does a passed inspection guarantee the whole shipment?
No. Findings depend on the agreed scope, sampling and conditions observed. The report should state what was checked and any limitations. Checks before shipment do not establish the condition of goods after subsequent handling or transport.
Is a factory audit the same as product inspection?
No. An audit examines the manufacturer’s systems and capability; product inspection checks identified goods against agreed requirements. A satisfactory audit does not establish that a particular batch or machine passes inspection.
What information is needed for an inspection quotation?
Provide the product specification, quantity, manufacturer address, production status, inspection stage, required tests and reporting deadline. Include destination requirements and any contractual witness points so quotations cover the same assignment.
What should happen after a failed inspection?
Record the nonconformities, agree corrective actions and determine whether reinspection is required before accepting the goods. The authorised buyer or engineer should approve any deviation, and shipment and payment decisions should follow the purchase contract.
Does CAMAL accept letters of credit for these procurement orders?
No. CAMAL’s procurement payment terms are TT only, not letters of credit. Agree inspection, acceptance and payment milestones in writing before placing the order.
