This is a selected comparison of Chinese construction companies by sector and project fit, rather than a complete ranking of China’s ten largest contractors. The numbering identifies the profiles; it does not rank their size, financial strength or suitability for your project.

The guide is written for Construction Directors, Procurement Managers, Fleet Managers and industrial project teams evaluating requirements in Australia, Africa and Southeast Asia. For an ASX-listed miner developing an African operation, the immediate questions are who will deliver the civil works, who will purchase the equipment and which party will accept responsibility for commissioning.

Chinese Construction Companies at a Glance

Start with the required construction scope, then investigate the entity proposing to deliver it. A group-level capability statement is a starting point for questions, not evidence that every subsidiary can perform the same work.

Construction Contractors or Equipment Manufacturers: Which Do You Need?

A construction contractor delivers an agreed project scope, which may include engineering, procurement and construction. An equipment manufacturer supplies machinery. Before contacting either, decide whether your requirement is a complete construction package, an equipment order or a materials purchase. Define the responsibilities for installation, commissioning, spares and site support in the RFQ.

EPC means engineering, procurement and construction. The contract still needs to define what is included. A plant package might cover design and installation while excluding earthworks, operating chemicals, incoming power connections or owner-supplied equipment.

If your requirement is machinery rather than construction delivery, compare equipment at model level. Match duty cycle, operating conditions, attachments, spare parts and support arrangements before comparing quotations.

Ten Chinese Construction Company Profiles

The profiles below distinguish broad business scope from the checks needed for a particular contract. Linked corporate sources support company identification and stated activities. They do not replace verification of the team, resources and contractual commitments proposed for your project.

1. Shaanxi Construction and Installation Group

The business operating the SXAZ corporate website identifies itself as Shaanxi Construction and Installation Group. Its published activities include engineering design, construction, operational services and industrial manufacturing. This installation business should not be confused with the wider Shaanxi construction group when checking rankings or project credentials.

Procurement focus: For an industrial installation package, request the equipment list, installation boundaries, utility requirements and commissioning plan. Confirm whether the same legal entity takes responsibility for design, equipment purchasing and site installation.

Question to ask: “Which comparable installation projects were delivered by the entity submitting this quotation, and what work did it perform?”

2. Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG)

BUCG’s corporate website lists engineering construction, international business, design consulting and service operation among its activities. It is a starting point for buyers investigating urban construction packages, with suitability depending on the proposed operating company and its references.

Procurement focus: Request a scope matrix separating civil works, mechanical installation, electrical systems and owner-supplied equipment. For a constrained urban site, ask how deliveries, lifting operations and storage will be coordinated.

Question to ask: “Which completed project has comparable site constraints, technical scope and local delivery requirements?”

3. Shanxi Construction Investment Group

Shanxi Construction Investment Group’s corporate information identifies a construction group with multiple operating companies. Its infrastructure business page describes construction and infrastructure investment activities.

Procurement focus: Verify the proposed subsidiary before assessing capability. Do not infer mining-process expertise from a general construction profile. A mine’s roads, buildings and utilities require different references from a processing plant or underground development package.

Question to ask: “Which subsidiary will deliver this scope, and can it provide references covering the same work and operating conditions?”

4. China National Chemical Engineering Group (CNCEC)

CNCEC is an engineering group associated with chemical and petrochemical construction. Use CNCEC’s corporate website to establish group identity, then verify the specific engineering or construction company named in the proposal. Distinguish the parent group from listed or operating entities using similar English names.

Procurement focus: For a chemical plant, define the process design basis, materials of construction, inspection requirements and performance-test conditions. Confirm who accepts responsibility for process equipment, instrumentation and commissioning.

Question to ask: “Which entity is responsible for process performance, and what assumptions and exclusions apply to its guarantee?”

5. Hunan Construction Investment Group

Hunan Construction Investment Group was formed in July 2022 through the merger of the former Hunan Construction Engineering Group and Hunan Provincial Transportation, Water Conservancy and Construction Group. Its official group profile describes activities spanning buildings, roads, bridges, municipal works, water infrastructure and design.

Procurement focus: Check whether a proposal uses a current group company or a legacy name. For modular or prefabricated work, request drawings, interface tolerances, transport dimensions and the erection sequence instead of relying on general speed claims.

Question to ask: “Which company owns the proposed design and manufacturing scope, and who accepts the site interfaces?”

6. Beijing Construction Engineering Group (BCEG)

BCEG’s international operations include businesses using the BCEGI name. The BCEGI UK website identifies BCEGI Construction (UK) Ltd and publishes building-project references. Those references help identify an operating business; they do not establish capability or availability in every other market.

Procurement focus: Confirm which local company would deliver the contract, how it appoints subcontractors and whether relevant licences and insurance cover the proposed scope.

Question to ask: “Can the proposed contracting company provide references and delivery arrangements for our project country?”

7. Shanghai Construction Group (SCG)

SCG’s corporate directory lists businesses covering building construction, installation, foundations, municipal engineering, design and building materials. This range makes identification of the proposed delivery business essential.

Procurement focus: Ask for a responsibility matrix covering foundations, structural steel, installation and purchased equipment. Check that drawings, load information and connection details are issued early enough for each package.

Question to ask: “Which SCG business will contract for our package, and who controls the interfaces between design, fabrication and erection?”

8. Greenland Urban Development Group

Greenland Urban Development Group’s published profile describes an enterprise affiliated with Greenland Group, with activities including urban infrastructure, metro construction and building projects. A ranking or financial figure for another Greenland entity should not be transferred to this business.

Procurement focus: Obtain current information for the proposed contracting entity. Check its available resources, project commitments and recent comparable delivery references rather than relying on an older group overview.

Question to ask: “What current resources and completed references support this entity’s proposal for our contract?”

9. China Energy Engineering (CEEC)

China Energy Engineering’s official English website describes energy, power and infrastructure activities. Its corporate information distinguishes the group from China Energy Engineering Corporation Limited. Match the proposal to the precise entity and delivery team.

Procurement focus: For power-related works, define the electrical-system boundaries, equipment specifications, control interfaces and commissioning responsibilities. Site operating conditions and required acceptance tests should be explicit.

Question to ask: “Who is responsible for integrating the purchased equipment with the site’s electrical and control systems?”

10. China State Construction Engineering (CSCEC)

CSCEC is a major building and infrastructure construction group. Its corporate website provides a starting point for group information. Buyers should then identify the subsidiary and local delivery business responsible for the proposed contract.

Procurement focus: For a large building or infrastructure package, confirm the division of responsibilities between the contracting company, design team and subcontractors. Request comparable completed work and a programme tied to equipment and material deliveries.

Question to ask: “Which obligations sit with the contracting subsidiary, and what support is committed by other group companies?”

How Should You Shortlist Chinese Construction Companies?

Shortlist by technical scope, comparable completed work and the proposed delivery entity. Use company size and rankings as background information, then test whether the actual team can deliver your package.

  • Chemical or processing plant: Investigate process references, materials selection, equipment integration and performance acceptance. A chemical-engineering profile is more relevant than a general building reference.
  • Mine infrastructure: Separate access roads, workshops, accommodation, water systems and power works from mineral-processing or underground engineering. Assess each scope against matching references.
  • Urban or commercial building: Check structural systems, foundations, site constraints and the coordination of building services.
  • Energy infrastructure: Assess technology-specific experience, electrical interfaces, controls and commissioning arrangements.
  • Equipment-only purchase: Compare manufacturers and machine models. A construction contractor’s project portfolio does not replace equipment selection.

For example, a chemical plant and a high-rise building can both require steel, pumps and electrical systems, but their acceptance criteria differ. The chemical plant may depend on process performance and material compatibility, while the building package depends on structural and building-service requirements. Match the reference to the work being purchased.

If rankings form part of your review, consult the relevant ENR contractor list and record its edition and methodology. Global and international contractor lists measure different revenue scopes. Neither establishes project-specific suitability or the capability of every subsidiary.

What Should You Request Before Shortlisting a Contractor?

Request the proposed contracting entity’s registration details, relevant project references, a defined scope of work, technical exclusions, a delivery programme, quality documentation and the proposed support arrangements in the project country. For equipment and materials packages, include specifications, quantities, inspection requirements, acceptance criteria and the delivery location in the RFQ.

Confirm the legal entity that will quote, contract and receive payment. A parent group’s ranking does not establish the capabilities or financial position of every subsidiary.

  1. Identity: Record the Chinese legal name, English trading name, business registration details and relationship to the parent group.
  2. Comparable references: Ask for the client, location, completion date and exact scope delivered. A named project is insufficient without the company’s role.
  3. Technical capability: Review the proposed design team, construction resources, equipment and relevant qualifications.
  4. Delivery capacity: Check resource availability against the proposed programme and current commitments.
  5. Local execution: Establish who handles local subcontractors, permits, site support and project-country requirements.
  6. Quality and acceptance: Agree inspection stages, document requirements, tests and the treatment of nonconforming work.
  7. Commercial boundaries: Compare inclusions, exclusions, warranties and delivery responsibilities on the same basis.

For an industrial-project example, read CAMAL’s cement-plant sourcing case study. Use case studies to understand the procurement approach, then assess the evidence required for your own project.

Separate Equipment, Steel and Chemical Procurement Packages

Equipment and materials can be purchased separately from construction when the project contracts allow it and the interfaces are defined. Before placing a separate order, agree who approves the specification, checks compatibility, receives the goods and accepts responsibility for installation.

Information needed for the three industrial procurement verticals supported by CAMAL.
PackageDefine before requesting quotationsAgree with the construction team
Heavy equipmentApplication, operating conditions, required capacity, attachments, spare parts and delivery locationUnloading, assembly, operator requirements, servicing and commissioning boundaries
Steel productsGrade, applicable standard, dimensions, tolerances, quantities, coating and document requirementsDrawing approval, inspection, identification, storage and acceptance
ChemicalsProduct identity, grade, specification, quantity, packaging, safety data sheet and certificate of analysis requirementsTechnical approval, material compatibility, storage, handling and delivery schedule

For a separate materials package, review this steel procurement case study. For machinery selection, the XCMG and Zoomlion comparison provides a related equipment-buying starting point.

CAMAL Ltd connects global industrial buyers with Chinese manufacturers across heavy equipment, chemicals and steel products. Review CAMAL’s procurement process when preparing a sourcing enquiry for an identified project requirement.

What Should Procurement Managers Include in an RFQ?

An RFQ should identify the buyer, project country, technical requirement, quantities, delivery location and acceptance criteria. Attach the relevant specifications and drawings so quotations can be compared against the same requirement.

  • Buyer and project: Company name, buyer’s role, project name, country and intended application.
  • Package scope: Construction, equipment, steel or chemicals, with the included and excluded work stated.
  • Technical documents: Specifications, drawings, applicable standards and approved revision numbers.
  • Quantities: Units, tonnage, dimensions, packaging or an equipment schedule as applicable.
  • Operating conditions: Relevant site conditions, duty requirements and technical constraints.
  • Quality requirements: Inspection stages, test methods, certificates and acceptance criteria.
  • Delivery: Required date, destination, shipment arrangement and site receiving limitations.
  • Support: Installation interfaces, commissioning, warranty, spare parts and documentation.
  • Commercial basis: Currency, quotation validity, named delivery term and payment arrangements.

Agree Payment, Inspection and Delivery Before Ordering

For CAMAL procurement orders, payment is by TT only. Agree the payment schedule, inspection stages and release documents in writing for the specific order. EPC contractors set their own commercial terms; CAMAL’s payment policy should not be assumed to apply to their construction contracts.

  • Before a deposit: Confirm the contracting entity, specification, drawings, exclusions and agreed bank-beneficiary details.
  • During production: Follow the agreed inspection plan and record any approved technical changes.
  • Before shipment: Check the agreed inspection results, packing details and required release documents.
  • At delivery: Record receipt, shortages or damage and follow the agreed acceptance procedure.

Compare the complete delivery scope, not just the quoted product price. Freight, handling, installation requirements, spare parts and inspection arrangements can change the practical value of an offer.

Frequently Asked Questions About Chinese Construction Companies

How do you verify a Chinese construction contractor?

Verify the proposed contracting entity, its registration details, relevant qualifications and comparable completed projects. Confirm the exact work it performed, the resources it will allocate and its delivery arrangements in the project country. A parent group’s reputation does not replace checks on the entity submitting the quotation.

What is the difference between a contractor and an equipment manufacturer?

A contractor delivers an agreed construction scope, while an equipment manufacturer supplies machinery. An EPC contract can include equipment procurement, but the contract must identify responsibility for specifications, purchasing, installation, commissioning and acceptance.

Which Chinese construction company is best for a mining project?

There is no single best company for every mining project. Shortlist against the specific package, such as roads, workshops, power, water or processing infrastructure, and request comparable references from the proposed delivery entity. General building experience does not establish mineral-processing expertise.

What information should a procurement RFQ include?

Include the buyer’s company, project country, application, technical specifications, quantities, delivery location and required date. Add drawings, inspection requirements, acceptance criteria, package exclusions and support requirements so quotations can be compared on the same basis.

Can equipment and steel be procured separately from the construction contract?

Yes, when the project contracts allow separate purchasing and responsibilities are agreed. Define who approves specifications and drawings, inspects the goods, receives deliveries and accepts responsibility for installation and compatibility.

How can CAMAL help with construction procurement?

CAMAL Ltd connects global industrial buyers with Chinese manufacturers of heavy equipment, chemicals and steel products. Send the project requirements and technical documents to discuss the relevant sourcing and procurement scope.

What payment terms apply to CAMAL procurement orders?

CAMAL procurement orders use TT payment terms only; LC is not offered. The payment schedule, inspection stages and release documents must be agreed for the specific order. Construction contractors may use different commercial terms.

Choose the Delivery Entity and Procurement Scope Before Comparing Prices

The useful comparison between Chinese construction companies starts with the work your project needs. Match that scope to a named delivery business, check comparable references and agree the interfaces between construction, equipment and materials. A clear RFQ gives your team a basis for comparing technical and commercial offers.

For equipment, steel or chemical procurement from China, contact CAMAL with your project requirements. Include the destination country, specifications, quantities and delivery date so the discussion starts with the actual buying requirement.
